The elegant black-capped gull is confined to East Asia's coastal regions. Tiny and strong, with long wings and dark beaks all over the feathers. Adult breeding feathers have black heads. Of all the plumage colors of adult birds, there is a special white wingtip, unlike a red-headed gull.

The red-headed gull, with a long reddish bill and a heavier body, is similar to its entire body, but bigger. Unlike the red-headed gull that has a reddish or yellowish beak base, the sub-adult and the first winter have a black beak. The call is distinctive, high-pitched, like a tern, "kee-eek".
